7 of the Most Common Vaping Myths – Getting to the Truth
1. Vaping is Just as Bad for You as Smoking Cigarettes
This is number one of the seven most common vaping myths. Let’s clear this up.
First off, a cigarette is made up of thousands of chemicals, many of which lead to deadly diseases. This is fact. Tobacco cigarettes contain highly dangerous substances such as tar, carbon monoxide and even ammonia.
Tar gets released into the lungs after inhaling on a cigarette. The more you smoke, the more tar you ingest, and it remains there, creating a toxic web of chemicals that leads to lung cancer.
Carbon monoxide is also taken into the body after inhaling on a cigarette. Too much in the body can lead to raised blood pressure, increasing the risk of a heart attack.
Now compare that to an e-cigarette, which heats up e-liquid and creates the water vapour. E-liquid is made from nicotine, flavourings and PG which is used as part of asthma medication, meaning there are no harmful chemicals.
2. E-cigarettes Are Not Regulated
They weren’t when they first came on the market almost a decade ago. Things have changed, so let’s dispel the second of the most common vaping myths:
The UK has some of the strictest laws against smoking and vaping in the world.
All vaping devices must stick to the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016. These laws lay out the standards all vaping equipment must meet in order to be sold on the market. They even cover what must be displayed on packaging, just like tobacco cigarettes.
Furthermore, all e-cigarettes sold in the UK must be registered with the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
Finally, the EU’s Tobacco Products Directive came into effect in 2017. It states that there can only be a maximum amount of nicotine in a bottle of e-liquid and that bottle cannot ever contain more than 10ml of liquid.
3. Vaping Costs More Than Smoking
Third of the most common myths, and one often taken out of context. (Keep in mind, though, this is for basic vaping devices used to quit smoking. Vaping enthusiasts who buy high end products like expensive mods to produce massive clouds will spend a great deal of cash for their vaping lifestyle.)
The average cost of a packet of cigarettes costs about £15. To put it into context, someone who smokes a pack a day spends nearly £5,500 a year on tobacco cigarettes alone.
Compare that to vaping where you can buy a good e-cigarette for around £30, a year’s supply of e-liquid can cost around £200, and replacement coils around £80 a year.
Totalling that up comes to £310 for the year.
That is a huge saving and just goes to show that the myth that vaping costs more than smoking is completely false.
4. Vaping is More Addictive Than Cigarettes
Vaping gives people the freedom to customise how much nicotine they are exposed to. Not only that, it is possible to purchase e-liquid that contains 0% nicotine. Tobacco cigarettes do not have these options.
The health risks that surround smoking tobacco cigarettes are well known. Going back to myth 1 alone, the differences are staggering. If they were to be introduced in the modern day, governments would reject them in a heartbeat.
Also, going back to Myth #1, e-cigarettes contain far less harmful chemicals than tobacco cigarettes. Once the body is exposed to the substances frequently, the effects of them becomes normal. E-cigarettes are chemical free and so the body remains healthy.
5. E-cigarettes Contain Antifreeze
Number five of the most common vaping myths has to be one of the worst rumors spread around about vaping.
The reason why people sometimes associate e-cigarettes and antifreeze is because e-liquids contain a chemical called Propylene Glycol (PG) which is sometimes used in antifreeze. PG is used to prevent damage to people who accidentally ingest it into the body.
So, while PG is used in the makeup of e-liquid, it is not antifreeze.
This myth doesn’t take too much explaining to clear.
6. Vaping is a Gateway to Smoking
This is one of the most common vaping myths touted by anti-vaping politicians – and it has a word missing.
The truth is that vaping is a gateway to quitting smoking.
Vaping was created as a healthier alternative to smoking in the first place, meaning it is designed to deter people from smoking regular tobacco cigarettes.
E-cigarettes are recommended by the NHS to help quit smoking. They found that two thirds of all smokers that switched to vaping as part of their quitting smoking program were successful.
Furthermore, there is an active vaping community of which members have experienced smoking and now use vaping as an alternative. By having that support network, people using e-cigarettes are far more likely to quit and stay on track.
Vaping is a pleasurable experience for most smokers and should be encouraged for all smokers looking to quit.
7. E-cigarettes are Dangerous and Can Explode
Last of the most common vaping myths is this insanity – and it’s not the device that’s to blame, but the user’s misuse of the product.
This has only become a thing because of the media picking up on one or two stories. In truth, the reason why they exploded is because the users were not making proper use of the batteries.
This can be said about any electrical item. As long as guidelines are followed then there is no reason why the battery should cause any harm.
